adventures book tour: that's a wrap!

January 7 – 26ish, 2019
Hello friends! The past few weeks I've been totally thrilled to share the adventures (virtual) book tour over on Instagram, and today, I am so excited to share this round-up post with you here!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record... the book is my attempt to touch on each stage of my FPP process—from piecing technique to pattern design—in three sequential parts. The tour tracks the book from beginning to end, starting with Plant Lady (Parts I and II, which cover everything you need to start sewing on paper (Part I) and designing your own patterns (Part II)), all the way through the seven design prompts (Part III... aka where the adventure begins!)

Part III is workbook-style, divided into 7 design prompt/project pairings to get your creative juices flowing:

Learning by the Letter (Snooze)
Traditional with a Twist (Prickly Path)
Objects (Voodoo Feather)
Creatures (Folksy Friends)
Think Outside the (Square) Box (Fireflies)
Repeat Designs (Jungleview)
Single Foundation Paper Piecing (Double Diamond Wedding Ring)

The brief design directives are brought to life with gorgeous collage images (photographed by @ericlubrick and styled by @annamarisa) intended to spark design inspiration of your own. The projects (my “takes” on each prompt) are more of what you might expect from a traditional craft book—project instructions complete with patterns to make the book sample.

If you're on Instagram and happened to miss any of the tour posts, you can find nearly all the guest posts under the #adventuresbooktour hashtag. For those of you who don't use Instagram, feel free to leisurely scroll through the guest posts below to catch up on everything from day 1!

P.S. Each guest designer/maker was given a chance to offer an autographed copy of the book to one of their followers. Though some giveaways have closed, a handful will remain open into early this week. Be sure to check the "giveaways" highlight on my Instagram profile for the ones that are still active :)

Tuesday January 8 - Graffiti FPP

***GIVEAWAY BELOW!*** Any other doodlers out there? That’s always been my thing. Not so much drawing intricate stand-alone figures as sketching new shapes within geometric bounds. For me, #graffitiFPP is essentially a natural extension of that practice. It’s my handwriting. After designing a block, I’ll start layering additional details to help round out a design and bring the main figure to the forefront through a series of freehand elements. Or, as my friend @littleislandquilting so eloquently put it, “artistic randomness.” ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป‍๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿค“ The ๐Ÿ“– includes a brief overview, including a sampling of motifs to spice things up. I’ve found, over time, that I have a core group of go-to graffiti: geese, spikes, stripes and stars, for starters. But the possibilities should, in theory, be endless! So, for a little challenge, tell me, what motifs do *you* want to see in a future #graffitiFPP design? G๐Ÿ“–I๐ŸงตV๐Ÿ“–E๐ŸงตA๐Ÿ“–W๐ŸงตA๐Ÿ“–Y Like this post and comment below for a chance to adlib your own graffiti in a supersized ๐Ÿ™ Septopus ๐Ÿฆ‘ from #adventuresinpaperpiecinganddesign.... <<read: WIN A SIGNED COPY>> *PLUS* a chance to win three neutral spools of @wonderfilspecialtythread’s #decobob (swipe!) to keep all those layers trim and tidy when you stitch up your masterpiece! If you haven’t yet tried it, you’ll be amazed by how well it handles (and flattens) overlapping seams. ๐Ÿ–ค Giveaway will stay open through January 28th. ๐Ÿ–ค #adventuresbooktour ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ“– #creativewithasideofcrazy

Wednesday January 9 - Design Prompt No. 1 - Learning by the Letter

Giuseppe Ribaudo (aka Giucy Giuce) (@giucy_giuce)

GIVEAWAY CLOSED! Super excited that today is my day on the #adventuresbooktour. @nohatsquilts’ #adventuresinpaperpiecinganddesign is a remarkable book. Sarah has not only designed an eclectic and thoughtful collection of quilts, but in the book she also gives you the tools and skills to design your own #foundationpaperpiecing patterns. I can’t say enough good things about this incredible book. The generosity of not only sharing your patterns with the world but also the skills in which to create your own designs is just incredible. I have long loved Sarah’s work so to be able to get a look inside her process is beyond exciting. Being on this tour has presented me with an opportunity that I have waited for for such a long time. Do you have a quilt idea that has been floating about in your mind for what feels like forever? With what I learned from the Learning by the Letter portion of Sarah’s book I am finally able to bring a quilt idea I have had for years to life. I’ve never found the right letter pattern to write this phrase I’ve had in my head for so long. So I am designing my own with the help of Sarah’s book. I am having such a good time working on this project. I can’t wait to start sewing the letters next week! And now a GIVEAWAY (be sure to read all the rules)! Wanna win a copy of #adventuresinpp, a big ol’ #quantumbygg scrap bag, plus some other secret goodies compliments of yours truly? Just follow me and follow @nohatsquilts, like this video, tag a friend below, and that’s it! Tag as many friends as you would like in separate comments. Internationals entries welcome! Saturday January 12 - Prickly Path

Anneliese Johnson (@eyecandyquilts | eyecandyquilts.com)

UPDATE: Giveaway closed. Thank you! I’m always a day late and a dollar short. In my defense I had a work conference this week and a live bat ๐Ÿฆ‡ showed up in my shower at home. It’s been a thing. But I really wanted to come home and play with my version of @nohatsquilts’ Prickly Path. And after some marathon stitching, I’ve got it together. The original #pricklypathquilt in the new Adventures in Paper Piecing book is gorgeous. Beautiful Alison Glass fabrics with a crisp white background. So I wanted to flip the focus. I used a favorite @gertrudemade giant floral as the background and made the arcs scrappy neutrals. I think it looks like giant lace on top of the floral. I did eight blocks to make four block wide bed runner. At 84” long, I think it’s perfect. But I also love it so that I want to do more with it...hmmm the paper piecing possibilities! And because I don’t want to Bogart all the creative goodies in Sarah’s book, there’s a giveaway. Yay prizes! All you have to do to win a copy of Sarah’s book is to follow me @eyecandyquilts and @nohatsquilts, and leave a comment below telling me what colors you’d like to make your Prickly Path. Tag as many friends as you’d like for additional chances to win – open internationally until January 19. #๐Ÿ‘ #adventuresbooktour #nohatsquilts #eyecandyquilts

Featured Fabric Designer: Alison Glass (@alisonglass)

GIVEAWAY! Sarah Sharp of @nohatsquilts created this beautiful Prickly Path quilt using fabrics from a number of my fabric collections for her book, Adventures in Paper Piecing & Design. I love this quilt and I am so happy to get to share it today as part of Sarah’s book tour. The book is filled with lovely photographs, it covers a range of information including the basics of foundation paper piecing through tips and exercises to help you create your own paper pieced projects. Paper piecing is a great method for creating shapes not easily achievable with traditional patchwork. It’s one of my favorite techniques. I’m a long time fan of Sarah and her style! And @angelafmq quilted it, so that’s rad. GIVEAWAY: Sarah is providing a signed copy of her book and I will add in a surprise fabric bundle reminiscent of the fabric in Prickly Path - that means there will be some OOP and hard to find pieces in there. To enter, just post a nice comment and tag a friend who you think might enjoy Sarah’s book. We will pick a random winner next Saturday, January 19, 2019. - Alison Congratulations @taylormadecreates - you are our winner! #adventuresinpp #alisonglass #andoverfabrics #adventuresbooktour #nohatsquilts #adventuresinpaperpiecinganddesign

Monday January 14 - Design Prompt No. 3 - Objects

Alison Robins (@littleislandquilting)

**GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED** - winning number picked by husband was @elnorac My stop on @nohatsquilts tour for her new book Adventures In Paper Piecing. I’m officially down as coming up with an ‘object.’ After a couple of false starts (Penhill Dark Monarch dahlia, page 19 of the current Sarah Raven catalogue ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผ‍♀️๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผ‍♀️) I kept coming back to the simplicity of the pp trees you’ll find in Sarah’s feed, plus the idea of the fish. And then I had a lightbulb moment as to how I could combine the elements. A DEAD FISH.๐Ÿ ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿก Why has no one ever thought of that before? And who doesn’t need a Dead Pink Fish Pouch in their lives? ๐Ÿ™„ Regard the book as a comprehensive and detailed break down of not only how to paper piece the patterns provided but also a blueprint to go off piste and make whatever you fancy. It’s also got my name in it as I provided one of the fish in the Folksy Friends quilt on page 78. It’ll be easy to spot: it’s the orange one. If those aren’t reasons in their own rights to get the book, you can also leave a comment here/tag a friend/do whatever you feel comfortable with and a winner drawn on Friday will receive a signed (by Sarah sadly, not me ๐Ÿ™„) copy of the book. I’m not a huge blower of smoke up people’s rear ends but I do have to say the amount of attention to detail and info packed in to the book (and the fact it’s got my name in it) is worth the purchase. I am a mahoosive admirer of those who follow their own creative path and this book is evidence of it. Well done. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป #adventuresbooktour #adventuresinpaperpiecinganddesign #nowimgoingtobelateforwork #iloveyousarah ๐Ÿ˜˜

Edit: GIVEAWAY CLOSED. Giveaway below! I'm super excited that it's my turn on the #adventuresbooktour as I genuinely love this book by @nohatsquilts. Read on for the giveaway! . One thing i love about this book is it's not just patterns but walks through how to make your own designs in a lot of depth. For me, I found the book helpful because I've made paper piecing patterns for years, but a lot of it was based on intuition. This book described what I'd been doing all this time and gave me the power to use those skills more intentionally and effectively. And on a personal note, Sarah is a lovely person and friend and we've been sharing our life goals since our first fateful meeting and accidentally romantic walk on the beach on Valentine's day. ๐Ÿคฃ So I'm ecstatic for her that she's brought this phenomenal book to life. ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’– . For the hop, I chose #designprompt4 "creatures" and I'm sure it'll surprise no one that I decided it was time to tackle the #technicolormenagerie fox. I've gotten as far as the ear and trying to simplify as I go (swipe to see how I'm breaking it down so far). Y'all, I'm gonna need more letters in the alphabet. I'm at G and I've only done the left ear. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ so it may be a bit before this is finished. If you've managed to read this far, your reward is a chance at a GIVEAWAY! For a chance to win a signed copy of Sarah's book, follow me @playcrafts and Sarah @nohatsquilts , and leave a comment below telling me which animal you'd like to see a paper piecing pattern for the most. So when the opportunity to be a part of her book tour came along I was super happy to jump on board! Her new book is seriously incredible and if you haven’t tried paper piecing or want to create your own pattern she’s got you covered! Meet #folksyfriendsquilt - I dyed the indigo for my fish and am super happy with how he turned out. I’ll add him to my dads quilt (yeah I gotta get back to that!). Now for a giveaway!!! Friday January 18 - Design Prompt No. 5 - Think Outside the (Square) Block

Giveaway below….Today it is my turn on the book tour for Sarah’s @nohatsquilts fabulous book Adventures in Paper Piecing. . Most people know how much I love paper piecing… it is how my quilting adventure started and is my go to technique still. Over the years I have used hundreds of different paper piecing patterns but none of them made me more excited than when I started making Sarah’s Folksy Fish. Sarah designs patterns that are not your average paper piecing pattern. She brings to her designs a wonderful sense of freedom and fun. They are playful and modern but leave you room to add your own touches if you want. They are perfection… and really are a reflection of their designer who is fun, a little quirky and so kind. I was so excited when I finally got a copy of her wonderful book in my hands. Not only does it add some more fish to my collection, but it has the most wonderful collection of patterns including my new obsession House Plants. The icing on the cake is that the book is a tool to help you design your own paper piecing patterns if you so inclined. Sarah takes you step by step through the process making what can seem daunting really easy. . So for the book tour I was challenged to design my own paper piecing pattern using a shape other than a square. After much deliberation I settled on using a triangle template… turning it upside down I played with a heart shape pattern. So far so good…. but then I had to add sides to my heart and viola I am back at a square. I totally and utterly failed to think outside the box….but I did have a blast using the grafetti layouts that are in the book to make some fun hearts. I am not sure what this says about me as a person - does it show I can not follow simple instructions or maybe it means that I really like squares! . If you would like to win your very own signed copy of Adventures in Paper Piecing follow me @wombatquilts and @nohatsquilts, and leave a comment below telling me what your graffiti tag name would be . Tag as many friends as you’d like for additional chances to win – open internationally until Monday the 21st of January. #adventuresbooktour #adventuresinpaperpiecinganddesign

Sunday January 20 - Sunday Book Review!

Sarah Ashford (@sarahashfordstudio)

***SUNDAY REVIEW *** I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share this fantastic book Adventures in Paper Piecing and Design by Sarah Elizabeth Sharp @nohatsquilts . As you can see, Sarah’s designs are just so detailed and incredible. I want to make them all! ๐Ÿ’š But this so much more than just a pattern book. Sarah takes you step by step through the process, from having a seed of a design idea, or finding design inspiration, to designing a block from images or sketches. There’s a series of exercises, devised to get increasingly more challenging, to get you more and more confident with the design process. ๐Ÿ’š To say this book is comprehensive is an understatement; Sarah leaves no aspect of the process unturned, and I love her happy conversational tone and anecdotes as she guides you through. This really isn’t just a pattern book (although the patterns are Incredible ๐Ÿ’•) it’s SO much more. For anyone who loves FPP this is the book for you if you want to sharpen your skills and take that next step and come up with your own designs. ๐Ÿ’š I really am in awe of Sarah’s talent and I for one have certainly learnt so much from this fabulous book! . . . #sarahashfordstudio #sundayreview #sarahssundayreview #paperpiecing #fpp #foundationpaperpiecing #modernquilting #bookreview #quiltingbook #nohatsquilts #design #patterndesign #quiltdesign

(giveaway closed) It's finally my turn to gush about how fantastic @nohatsquilts new book #adventuresinpaperpiecinganddesign really is. I used Sarah's prompts to create this adorable little village as a repeating paper pieced pattern. As I told Sarah, I see your complicated busy paper piecing patterns and raise you this one! Sure I could have left some negative space and made this easier to piece but....nah. This is more fun. Visit my blog (link in profile) to see more about the process to create this fun pattern. Merran Fryer (@123bluejumper)

*GIVEAWAY *Adventures in Paper Piecing! Eek my turn on the book tour! I have to say the #jungleviewquilt chose me . Since moving north I see a tropical landscape every day and the Monstera is a common motif. Being paper pieced was a bonus. I’m a big fan, I like the accuracy but most of all it justifies my stash of the tiniest of scraps! But if tiny piecing is not your thing it’s also fun to enlarge Sarah’s templates. #jungleviewquilt ‘s role in the book is to illustrate how to design a pattern repeat. Constructing the quilt I learnt how and had a go myself at both a half drop and a simple repeat ( I may have been influenced by the Escher exhibit !) if you want to try it yourself for a chance to win Sarah’s book follow me and @nohatsquilts and leave a comment below - what do you like ( or dislike) about paper piecing? . Thursday January 24 - Design Prompt No. 7 - Single Foundation Paper Piecing

Jamie Swanson (@jamiemswansonquilts)

You guys! I’m in a book from @nohatsquilts!!! I feel so flattered! And she’s even letting me give one away too (plus I’m throwing in a free digital copy of my #luminaryquilt pattern for the winner as well!) I’ll tell you how to win below. ETA: contest is now over, congrats to @blongfield who is the winner!!!! . Here’s how it all happened. . I LOVE itty bitty tiny little #miniminiquilts. But if you’ve ever tried to make one, you know how hard it is to match up seams when your pieces are miniscule. . Paper piecing helped… but some designs simply don’t work with the traditional #foundationpaperpiecing techniques, such as a simple nine-patch. You still would need to match up tiny sections. . But then I discovered #singlepaperpiecing and everything changed. And today I want to share how easy it is and how it can transform your quilting. . It doesn’t have to be hard, and you don’t need anything fancy. In fact, you just need some grid paper and you’re good to go. . @nohatsquilts explains all about it in her new book along with TONS of other great paper piecing tips (and I’m so flattered for the mention). But I’ve also put a full tutorial on how to do this in the highlights on my profile right now if you want to check it out (swipe the photos to the side to see how to find this). . So how do you get your hands on a free copy of this book and a copy of my Luminary Quilt pattern? Follow both me @jamiemswansonquilts and @nohatsquilts, and leave a comment below telling me who your favorite quilt or fabric designer is. Today is my day to share on @nohatsquilts’ Adventures in Paper Piecing book tour! (Read on for a GIVEAWAY!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve loved Sarah’s gemstone double weddings ring quilts since I saw her first one back in 2013. This amazing book gave me the chance to make my own! I made a rainbow DWR using all @heatherrossinsta and @libertylondon fabrics. ๐Ÿฅฐ The book provides incredible directions for paper piecing, and gives you permission to use templates if you want! I used @dzimmerman1252’s @ezquilting templates for the rings, but I did use Sarah’s method and patterns to paper piece a birthstone gem, and I’m so proud of it!! I even read the directions, and the @daylightcompanyusa lightbox definitely earned its keep on that part. ๐Ÿ˜‚ you can see more photos of this project on my blog. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ GIVEAWAY!! Saturday January 26 – Recap and Photography

Sarah Sharp (@nohatsquilts | nohatsinthehouse.com)

To say that @ericlubrick is a superhero with a camera would be putting it lightly. He is so incredibly talented. And humble. Last spring, Eric leapt at the opportunity to help pull this book together in the most magical way. On a moment’s notice, he was unloading gear and scoping locations in our home (...that houses three young children ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘ฏ‍♀️๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ’†๐Ÿป‍♀️๐Ÿ˜) for crazy good shots like this—my go-to machine (@janomeamerica 1600PQC) on my grandmother’s sewing desk, sitting in our little ocelot-wallpapered study. ๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿผ In between takes, he was talking me off the ledge and bringing me back down to reality (...or bonding with my husband over their shared love of fishing and the outdoors). If you’ve seen the collages in the book, I think you already know what I mean when I say Eric brought something really special to the book. For those of you who haven’t, tomorrow I’ll be sharing a little slideshow (with book images and some extra takes!) so you can experience Eric’s fresh, light and bright artistry firsthand. Stay tuned! #adventuresinpaperpiecinganddesign #adventuresbooktour #nohatsathome

Got a minute? Eric @ericlubrick brought the visuals for this book together in a way that helped take what I’d been envisioning in my head from concept to reality. It felt as though we were on the same page working together from day 1—which was massively helpful, considering we only had so much time to turn things around ๐Ÿคฃ. The slideshow above are the fruits of that labor (and thank you @annamarisa for the mad styling and @ctpublishing for the flat shots!) I also have to say Adventures in Paper Piecing & Design would be nothing but a few feathers and some intricately pieced tops without the masterful work of six longarm quilters: @myquiltdiet (#plantladyquilt ๐ŸŒฑ) @karleeporterdesign (#snoozequilt ๐Ÿ’ค) @angelafmq (#pricklypathquilt) @kathleenquilts (#folksyfriendsquilt ๐Ÿฆ€๐Ÿ™) @rachaeldorr (#firefliesquilt ✨) @practicaldazzle (#doublediamondweddingring ๐Ÿ’) I asked each of them to share a few words about their process over on my blog (nohatsinthehouse.com). All those are now live, so be sure to check them out if you’re interested in hearing more about their fortรฉ (or lingering on any of these close-ups for more than a split second ☺️). #adventuresbooktour #adventuresinpaperpiecinganddesign #voodoofeathercushion #jungleviewquilt
